Wellness While Traveling
I travel often for work and recently realized that although I’ve visited many cities, I haven’t truly experienced them. My days are filled with meetings in conference rooms, happy hour in the hotel bar, followed by a night in bed catching up on emails.
Recently I have decided that work trips will no longer be all about work; they will now include me. This year, I have started to intentionally plan two experiences to enjoy every trip. Most of the time, it’s something simple like trying a local coffee shop or scheduling a run in a popular park or trail. Sometimes I get a little more adventurous, and explore the local art district or go to an evening dance class. Regardless, now when I travel for work, I’ve learned to include myself in the agenda.
Don’t let another work trip end with sitting in a conference room all day. Plan experiences and wellness as part of your personal agenda. Below are a few ideas.
Make a date with a hotel gym and try a new workout or new piece of equipment.
Try a free yoga or pilates class at a studio. It’s a great way to workout, network, and help their business by leaving a great review.
Pack your own snacks. Go to a local market and grab fruits or bring your own trail mixes or bars.
Walk to a local coffee shop for your morning Joe before your meetings begin.
Trade the after work happy hour for a visit to a local park or trail.
If you have extra time, try a bike tour. It’s a great way to experience the city.
No matter what you do, whether it’s going to the mall, a local bookstore or trying local cuisine, experience the city. Wellness isn’t only about exercise and protein to carb ratios. It’s about living. Experiencing new things keeps us inspired, invigorated and mentally alive. By taking time to experience life within your work days, you will be surprised how you will feel more energized to conquer your work.
